Travelling Hero: GoPro

June 20, 2018 - by Angie Michelle

While GoPro has faced some criticism over their drone, the Karma, which wasn’t as well-received as projected, they remain a dominant force in action cameras. One of their most recent wins is the 2018 GoPro Hero, a user-friendly, go-anywhere action camera – just what a touring adventurist like me needs. Now, you might be thinking that someone who doesn’t “adventure” doesn’t need one. Well, I disagree, and here’s why.

My family took a trip to Cancun, Mexico, recently, without me. Before they left, I advised them that I wanted photos and videos of all the fun that I, unfortunately, had to miss. Not being the most tech-savvy people I know, I figured I’d be lucky to see a few selfies, maybe. I was wrong and pleasantly surprised. One of their friends packed a brand-new GoPro Hero. I got to see the highlights of their trip, which was fantastic, but I was more impressed with how quickly they learned how to use the camera. So, I asked to borrow it for my next excursion.

I learned right away how my non-tech savvy family found this device so easy to use; The 2-inch touch display feels just like you’re operating a smart phone. Touchscreen controls are operated with the familiar gestures we’re accustomed to. And, if that isn’t simple enough, there’s also voice control. You can ask GoPro to record video, take a photo and even turn itself off.

This camera is affordable, durable and built for travel. Pictures are captured with a 10MP lens,10 frames per second for bursts of images, and video is recorded at 1080p. While those specs don’t compare to some of the other GoPro range of cameras, this little device still provides more than enough to capture your best travel moments. Sharing those moments on social media is easy with the free Quick app, for both Android and iOS. The Hero has WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, so you can quickly upload the app onto your phone, edit and share away.

A big bonus with the GoPro Hero is that It’s waterproof right out of the box, to 33 feet, so you don’t need to purchase an additional case, unless you really want to. This helps cut down on bulk, since unnecessary accessories can take up significant luggage space. If you don’t mind having the extra parts, the Hero is compatible with over 30 GoPro accessories, so there are plenty of options, if you decide to take adventure video seriously.

For the price, performance and content-sharing app, the Hero is well worth considering for your travels this summer.
