Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key recently completed a $50-million renovation. Walking into the lobby with gentle soothing colours, palm leaf fans, and rattan furniture, in soft tones, the beach vibe is immediate and soothing. The unit I had was so large and comfortable boasting its own massive porch overlooking the pool. If it had a kitchen, I would have happily moved right in. This expansive resort, the largest on Key West, has seven restaurants, tennis courts, golf, a full-service marina, four pools, a sports field, a conference centre and a spa. Pastel-coloured villas line the streets of what appears to be a quaint village. It is all resort sprawled out over 60 acres with its own tram to help guests get from one area to another. The new restaurant, Angler and Ale is part of the resort, and located on the dock. A contemporary nautical theme is done artistically with local art all in keeping with the theme. The menu is filled with local fish and fresh vegetables. I enjoyed grilled grouper while the rest of the table enjoyed lobster tails, conch fritters and seared tuna. With panoramic views, they also have a “Hook N Cook” option allowing guests to bring in their fresh catch and have a chef cook it up. There is also an extensive beer selection with signature Angler’s Ale Brew.
