I went on the search for the perfect day backpack for years before finding the MEC Mountain Fountain 9 Hydration pack. What drew me to it originally was its bright teal colour, but after further investigation it became clear I shouldn’t just judge this pack by its colour.
Lightweight and compact in its design, it is perfect for day hikes as you get lost in search of that perfect waterfall, or even as a carry-on as you eagerly await your boarding call in anticipation of your next waypoint.
Despite its fun colour, this bag is also ‘packed’ with technical features. Its’ 2L Hydrapak® reservoir allows you to comfortably bring water along with you for your longer hikes and its’ interior sleeve helps to stabilize the bladder in case of leaks as you walk. It’s also equipped with a mesh back panel that came in handy during those extra steamy hikes, keeping me nice and cool during that high-noon beating sun.
This pack also has one of my all-time favourite features – a built-in rain cover that provides instant protection from all the elements. This was a lifesaver when I was hiking in Newfoundland and found myself strolling in the beautiful sunshine one minute, then seeking shelter from the snow the next.
The exterior bungee cords outfitting the front of the bag are also a pretty key feature. If you’re anything like me, I find myself taking on and off layers constantly, and this feature provided an easily accessible storage for my many sweaters, hats, raincoats, etc.
Retailing for just under $100, it may be a bit pricey for an average day hiker. However, if you are planning on longer expeditions where you will need the extra hydration and comfort, this is a very suitable option.
