No matter the waypoint, footwear is extremely important, especially in wet conditions.
When I set to find the perfect hiking boot, my only criteria is that they have to be Gor e-Tex. Luckily, during my search, I stumbled upon Salomon’s Quest Prime GTX Hiking Boot which not only utilizes Gore-Tex Extended Comfort Footwear, but was lightweight, high cut and extremely supportive.
The Salomon Quest Prime was a fantastic boot for me during my hiking trip across Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland. We found ourselves experiencing all four seasons within one day, and these boots helped me to stay warm and dry, no matter the condition.
At 570 grams, these are one of the most lightweight boots on the market, which is great when you are hiking a particularly long trail, or lugging them around in your backpack on a dry day. They are incredibly breathable and the s plit suede leather material is quite durable as it protects from daily wear and tear.
I deliberately chose the high cut as it not only supports both the ankle and foot, but blocks debris from entering the shoe. However, I suggest wearing them in prior to your trip, to avoid potential discomfort at the top of your ankle after prolonged use.
This can be remedied by the right pair of hiking socks. Available in both men and women’s styles, these boots retail starting at $230.
Although I experienced some minor pain, I did wear them for 12 hours a day, five days straight, through torrential downpour, gale force winds, hail storms, and snow squalls and I’d say they managed quite nicely!
Hiking boots are a tricky purchase, so no matter which ones you buy, make sure you try them on and walk around in them for a couple days to ensure they will support your foot properly.
